eBooks in these collections are available to SGU students, faculty, and staff only.

ebooks on EBSCOhost

Provides access to over 5,000 electronic books in all subject areas.  Includes full text access to reference-works, scholarly monographs, literature and fiction.

Gale Virtual Reference Library

Provides full text access to reference materials in the areas of religion, social science, history, and science.  Materials may be viewed individually or searched as a group. Includes the New Catholic Encyclopedia.  View complete title list.

Salem Health

Full text access to a collection of health-related reference works, with information on cancer, psychology & mental health, and genetics. Includes Magill's Medical Guide.

Salem Science

Full text access to the Encyclopedia of Global Warming.

Free Online eBook Sites

These websites provide free access to a variety of eBooks.

Baen Free Library

Baen Books is now making available — for free — a number of its titles in electronic format.  Anyone who wishes can read these titles online — no conditions, no strings attached. Registration required, and several formats are available for download.

Google Books

Search for books in the collections of several major research libraries.  If the book is out of copyright, you’ll be able to view and download the entire book.  Recent titles still under copyright have limited availability.

Project Gutenberg

Offers over 38,000 free eBooks: choose among free epub books, free kindle books, download them or read them online.  Most texts are older literary works that are in the public domain in the United States.

Bartlby.com

Provides free access to eBooks in areas of reference, verse, fiction and non-fiction. 

Internet Archive: eBook & Texts Archive

Contains a wide range of fiction, popular books, children's books, historical texts and academic books.

National Academies Press

Provides access to electronic versions of over 4,000 titles published by the National Academies Press.  Download free PDF books covering a range of topics in science, engineering, and health.

NCBI Bookshelf (National Center for Biotechnology Information)

Provides free access to books and documents in life science and healthcare.

The Online Books Page

Provides an index of over one million online books.  Also provides links to some of the major sources and indexes of free online texts.

LibriVox

Provides access to free audio books of works from the public domain.  The books are read and recorded by LibriVox volunteers.

Lit2Go

A free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audio book) format. Each reading passage can also be downloaded as a PDF.

ManyBooks.net

Provides free access to more than 29,000 eBooks available for Kindle, Nook, iPad and most other eReaders.

Open Culture

Features free eBooks, mostly classics, that you can read on your computer, smart phone, or Kindle. It includes works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
